Following an exclusion order Apple won from the International Trade Commission in December, the U.S. Customs department has held up a shipment of smartphone maker HTC’s One X and Evo 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) handsets, pending an investigation into possible patent infringements, as reported by technology blog The Verge. The unnamed sources said they could confirm that shipments of the handsets were being held back.

The HTC One has already made its market debut, and The Wall Street Journal reported that the company said the customs review could disrupt future sales of the device. The One X, AT&T’s version of HTC’s new line of Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich, devices, has a 4.7-inch, 720p high-definition Gorilla Glass display and is constructed of polycarbonate for a lightweight yet durable feel.

“The U.S. availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order,” HTC said in an official statement. “We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC Evo 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.”

LightSquared, the would-be satellite 4G wireless network backed by billionaire Philip Falcone and his Harbinger Capital Partners hedge fund, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The move, it said in a May 14 statement, will give it “breathing room” to resolve ongoing regulatory issues.

The spectrum used by the network has repeatedly been found to interfere with GPS signals used by industries including aviation, law-enforcement and the military, preventing the network from receiving regulatory approval. On more than one occasion, LightSquared executives have called foul on the regulators overseeing the process, accusing them of rigging the results.

Bankruptcy, Falcone has said, would enable him to protect the company from creditors.

“The filing was necessary to preserve the value of our business and to ensure continued operations,” Marc Montagner, LightSquared’s interim co-chief operating officer and CFO, said in the statement.

“All of our efforts are focused on concluding this process in an efficient and successful manner,” Montagner added.

Montagner took on the role in February, after CEO Sanjiv Ahuja resigned, following a string of setbacks as the company adjusted the network and fought for its approval.

Apple may be on the verge of dropping Google’s mapping technology for a brand new in-house maps application using 3D mapping technology by C3 Technologies, which the company acquired in 2011. This followed earlier acquisitions of mapping-software companies Placebase and Poly9, which led analysts to think Apple was trying to wean its iOS devices off Google Maps.

That day may be fast approaching, if the “trusted sources” quoted by Apple blog 9to5Mac are to be believed. Apple is widely expected to show off iOS 6 at the upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference in June. According to the report, the app will be similar in look and feel to the Google Maps app, but will provide a faster, cleaner and more reliable user experience. The main feature will of course be the 3D mapping technology developed by C3, which users can access by clicking a button placed on the application.

On its Website, C3, which is based in Sweden, describes its technology as automated software and advanced algorithms, which enable them to “rapidly assemble extremely precise 3D models, and seamlessly integrate them with traditional 2D maps, satellite images, street-level photography and user-generated images.”

Nokia is selling Lumia 900 smartphones faster than it can sell them, Chris Weber, Nokia’s U.S. president, told PC Magazine at this week’s CTIA Wireless show in New Orleans. Despite a weak financial outlook, the Finnish phone maker is trying to spin good news about its Windows Phone-based devices.

“Demand has been outstripping supply for the first couple of weeks, and we’ve been working hard to rectify that,” said Weber, according to the report. “The demand for cyan [phones] is significantly outpacing supply. When you give people something different from a design perspective—colors, etc. —it really stands out, and consumers want that.”

The news follows on an April email to members of the press from a Nokia spokesperson, who likewise said that in various channels through the U.S. Nokia is receiving reports of “stock-outs” and consequently was “building and shipping devices constantly” to meet demand.

The success of the highest-end Lumia, and the latest to arrive, must feel like Christmas has come early in Finland. Nokia’s big decision to leave the Symbian platform and bet big on Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, a partnership epitomized by the Lumia 900, has been criticized by Nokia shareholders, who say they feel swindled by Nokia’s continuing poor performance. On May 3, a disgruntled shareholder went so far as to file a class-action complaint against Nokia in a New York District Court.

Online music storage firm MP3tunes Inc filed for bankruptcy in a U.S. court, following its prolonged run-in with music publishing giant EMI Group over copyright issues, court filings showed.

MP3tunes is a so-called cloud music service that lets users store music in online “lockers.” Amazon.com Inc, Apple Inc and Google Inc have similar cloud services.

EMI’s lawsuit against MP3tunes and its chief executive, Michael Robertson, is part of the music industry’s efforts to stop websites from letting people download and share music online without paying for it. Fourteen other record companies and music publishers were also part of the copyright case that was filed in 2007.

However, last year, a federal judge in Manhattan said MP3tunes and Robertson did not violate the federal Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in permitting downloads, except as to songs specifically identified as having been pirated.

Microsoft Corp unveiled a new design on Thursday for its second-ranked Bing search engine, introducing elements from Facebook and other social networks, as it tries to claw market share from leader Google Inc.

Slow off the mark in Internet search, Microsoft has racked up losses of more than $6 billion in its online unit since launching Bing three years ago, but has yet to make a mark on Google’s dominance of the lucrative ad search market.

In its latest push to increase usage of Bing, Microsoft is introducing a new, three-column screen design. Alongside the familiar search results displayed in blue to the left of the screen, Bing is rolling out an instant snapshot column, which displays extra information and links most likely to be useful such as maps, reviews and reservation tools.

To the right, it features a column of users’ Facebook friends, giving them the option of asking their advice on a search. Users can also access their contacts on LinkedIn, Twitter and other networks.

Microsoft, which owns a small fraction of Facebook after an investment in 2007, has been pioneering the integration of social network feeds into Internet search, being the first to allow access to real-time data from Facebook and Twitter in searches.

A group of Democrats today introduced legislation in both the House and Senate to prevent employers from forcing employers and job applicants into sharing information from their personal social networking accounts. In other words, Maryland may soon not be the only state that has banned employers demanding access to Facebook accounts. The Password Protection Act of 2012 (PPA) would also prevent employers from accessing information on any computer that isn’t owned or controlled by an employee, including private e-mail accounts, photo sharing sites, and smartphones.

Lenovo, the world’s second-largest PC company—though according to enthusiastic Lenovo staff, much of the world thinks it’s a pharmaceutical company, if they think of it at all—is planning to roll out new ThinkCentre and Edge Series PCs later this year that take advantage of Intel’s recently released Ivy Bridge processors.

Small-business owners and IT managers, both likely to know the Lenovo name, are also likely to appreciate these machines’ third-generation Intel Core processors, 15-second boot-up times, multiscreen functionality and smarter cooling methods.

The ThinkCentre Edge 92z is Lenovo’s thinnest commercial all-in-one (AIO) to date. Looking more like a monitor than a whole computer, it measures 2 inches thick and features an Infinity Glass front panel covering a 21.5-inch high-definition IPS LED display. Processor options include up to Core i7, and the machine comes equipped with the Lenovo Solution Center powered by Intel Small Business Advantage—tools for remotely managing things like updates and energy settings.

The 92z can be wirelessly connected to an HDTV or other business display, using Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology. Also included are a high-definition camera, array microphone, and voice and video conferencing capabilities.

The ThinkCentre Edge 72 is a desktop, also with Intel Core processor options up to a Core i7, Lenovo Enhanced Experience 3 (EE3)—Lenovo’s trick for such speedy boot-up times—and a “full package” of productivity tools and features that includes the ability to support two independent displays with VGA and DVI ports, so users can work separately on two monitors, according to a May 7 statement.
