Opera Mobile

Opera Mini just might be the most popular mobile browser around the globe, as yesterday the company announced that it serves one billion page views a day. How did they do it? Simple, get the thing on as many devices as possible. According to Opera Software ASA, the browser is supported by over 3,000 mobile phones. With so many different phones accessing Opera’s servers daily, the company claims their servers process 11,500 web pages a second (let’s just say we’d love to see their stacks).  Processing and compressing 90 percent of 11,500 pages per second before sending them back to users, Opera’s servers must be some of the most sophisticated around. And we thought we’d never see the day when a company would serve more of anything daily than McDonald’s serves burgers. Eat Opera’s dust, Ronald.

Motorola continues to align its smartphone business with Google‘s Android operating system, and while the strategy is one that analysts, and the market, have encouraged, Motorola has yet to fully reap the results.

In a July 29 announcement on its second-quarter earnings, Motorola showed a sixfold increase in profits—up to $162 million—though sales in its mobile device segment slipped 6 percent from a year ago, to $1.7 billion.

Still, it managed to increase the number of smartphones it shipped worldwide. While in the first quarter Motorola launched six handsets running the Android operating system and saw shipment totals of 2.3 million smartphones and 8.5 million total handsets, during the second quarter its smartphone tally jumped to 2.7 million units, though total handset sales fell to 8.3 million units.

Most notable among its second-quarter launches was the Droid X—an Android-running smartphone with a 1GHz processor and 4.3-inch display that appeared to be poised to take advantage of several factors. Namely, that Apple had been put on the defensive regarding the iPhone 4′s antenna design, and HTC was suffering shortages of its popular Droid Incredible and Evo 4G handsets. In the end, however, Motorola—and carrier partner Verizon Wireless—likewise felt the pinch of shortages, as suppliers that had dialed down production during the worst of 2009′s recession raced to increase production again and fill piling-up orders.

“The Droid X launch has been very well received and is seen as one of the best smartphones in the market today, with a 4.3-inch high-resolution display, Adobe Flash and an 8-megapixel camera,” Motorola Co-CEO Sanjay Jha said in July 29 statement. “As we continue to execute on our business strategy, we are in a strong position to continue improving our share in the rapidly growing smartphone market and improving our operating performance.”

Acknowledging Apple’s early success with the iPad, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer insisted Thursday that the software maker is hard at work on Windows-based tablets.

“They’ll be shipping as soon as they are ready,” Ballmer said, offering few details on the products, which he said will come from partners, not Microsoft itself. “It is Job One urgency. No one is sleeping at the switch.”

 Speaking to financial analysts, Ballmer said the goal is “not just to deliver products, but to deliver products that people want to buy.”

 As for Apple and the iPad, Ballmer said, “they’ve sold certainly more than I’d like them to have sold.”

MobileCrunch reports that RIM recently snatched up BlackPad.com, a possible name for their forthcoming BlackBerry tablet. The device is anticipated to land in pant-suited laps by the end of the year.

In May BGR heard that RIM’s tablet would sport an 8.9″ screen and would be marketed strictly as a “companion” device, though little has been confirmed as of yet. Except for the fact that the industry has apparently decided that tablets will henceforth be known only as “pads.”

A new start-up called Whamcloud is coming out of stealth mode Wednesday with $10 million in private funding and a notion to disrupt the often academic world of supercomputing by leveraging the Lustre open-source project.

According to CEO Brent Gorda, the company is targeting the need for high-performance storage solutions based on the popular combination of Linux and Lustre for application and data storage environments. The company plans to offer support and services initially, with an eye toward a turnkey supercomputing setup with hardware and software components, in the future.

For those less familiar with supercomputing technologies, Lustre is a massively parallel, distributed, open-source file system used for large scale cluster computing. It’s designed to enable I/O performance and scaling beyond the limits of traditional storage technology and potentially applicable to any enterprise storage environment where very high I/O bandwidth is required.

But it’s a hard technology to master and has had stability problems in the past. Oracle owns Lustre, by way of the Sun acquisition, and is in the position to provide support but hasn’t made any direct commercialization attempts.

In a move geared to please Android developers, Google July 27 said it has created a free licensing service to protect paid applications in the Android Market from unauthorized use.

The move will prevent tech-savvy users from downloading for-fee applications on the Android Market, which has some 70,000 free and paid programs.   

The service includes a set of libraries developers can use to query the Android Market licensing server to check up on licensing status of users.

The program retrieves information on whether users are authorized to access the app based on stored sales records, said Eric Chu, a member of Google’s Android Developer Ecosystem, in a blog post.

“This licensing service operating real time over the network provides more flexibility in choosing license-enforcement strategies, and a more secure approach in protecting your applications from unauthorized use, than copy protection,” Chu explained.

Google plans to replace the current Android Market copy protection tool with the new licensing service, which will manage access to all paid Market apps for Android 1.5 or higher, over the next few months.

Google has taken a lot of heat over the last few months for Android Market.

A new report on the economic impact of cyber crime found the average organization is paying a pretty penny, but that price can be cut through good governance.

According to the report, which was prepared by the Ponemon Institute and commissioned by ArcSight, the average cost of cyber-attacks at the 45 organizations that were analyzed was $3.8 million per year.

The study covered organizations with 500 or more seats, and was conducted during a five-month period ending June 23. Among its findings: it took an average of 14 days to resolve a cyber attack, with an average cost of $17,696 a day. Malicious insider attacks can take up to 42 days or more to resolve, the report found.

They are also the second most expensive incidents to handle, costing an average of $100,300 a day. The most expensive are Web-based attacks, which came in at $143,209 per day.
